A Look into SNHS and the Dia de Los Muertos Fiesta
by Keanna Rubio, Class of 2029
November 6, 2025 - Hanks High School's Sociedad Honoraria Hispánica (SHH), or Spanish National Honor Society, is more than just an academic club; it's a vibrant hub of cultural appreciation and community engagement. This year, the "Los Caballeros Unidos" chapter has been making waves with its commitment to service and its leadership in bringing a brand new cultural event to our campus: a Día de los Muertos celebration.
SHH, a national organization sponsored by the American Association of Teachers of Spanish and Portuguese (AATSP), recognizes students who excel in Spanish and Portuguese language studies. But beyond academics, SHH emphasizes leadership and service. Hanks High's chapter embodies these values through a variety of initiatives, from monthly "Damos Gracias" appreciation events for school staff to fundraising efforts like collecting bottle caps for children undergoing chemotherapy.
This year, the SHH took on a particularly ambitious project: organizing Hanks High School's first-ever Día de los Muertos fiesta. Spearheaded by student leader Scarleth Ramos and supported by Principal Gutiérrez, the event aimed to bring the entire Hanks community together to celebrate and honor the traditions of Día de los Muertos. The celebration was a resounding success, transforming the school into a vibrant display of cultural pride. Students and families enjoyed traditional food and drinks, while various clubs, including Scriptoria, Seeds, NHS, Knight Vision and more, contributed by hosting sales booths, adding to the festive atmosphere.
Perhaps the most enjoyable part of the fiesta was the music that filled the air thanks to performances by Mariachi, Los Trovadores, the Tonatiuh group, and even the Hanks Rock Band! Mariachi Los Trovadores started off the event by playing their classic crowd favorites including La Negra, La Bruja, Tanda del Dollar and much more. They were followed by the Tonatiuh group. They are a Folklorico Dance studio with groups of different ages.. The crowd was amazed and captivated with their effortless twirls and spins. After then, was the Hanks Rock Band, composed of many musicians and our Scriptoria Editor in Chief Elise! Finally, the event ended with the Catrina and Catrin contest where the winners were graciously awarded with gift cards from different places.
The Día de los Muertos celebration not only strengthened cultural identity but also served as a unifying meeting point for the entire Hanks communy. Given its overwhelming success, the SNHS hopes to make the Día de los Muertos fiesta an annual tradition at Hanks High School, ensuring that future generations can experience and celebrate this rich cultural heritage.
